In the afternoon we´ll do a treasure hunt in the village where he lives.

Parallels and meridians 

-They help us give precise locations.

- Parallels are horizontal lines that measure latitude (the distance of a place from the Equator).

    . The Equator divides the Earth into the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres.

The places north of the Equator are northern latitudes (N). The places south of the Equator are southern latitudes (S).

- Meridians are vertical lines that measure longitude ( the distance of a place from the Greenwich Meridian ).

    . The Greenwich Meridian divides the Earth into the eastern and Western Hemispheres.

 The places east of the Greenwich Meridian are eastern longitudes (E).
The places west of the Greenwich Meridian are western longitudes (W).

- Parallels and meridians form the Earth´s geographical coordinates. For example, the coordinates of Madrid are N - W.

Movements of the Moon

- It´s the Earth´s natural satellite.

- It orbits the Earth and it rotates on its axis. Both movements take the Moon 28 days to complete. 

- It shines because it reflects the light from the Sun, it doesn´t produce light.

- We can see four different lunar shapes depending on the position of the Moon.

Movements of the Earth. 

Rotation and revolution are the two movements of the Earth.

1. Rotation gives place to day and night. It´s the movement of the Earth on its axis. Each rotation of the Earth takes 24 hours to complete.

2. Revolution produces the *seasons. It´s the movement of the Earth around the Sun. Each revolution of the Earth takes 365.25 days to complete.

* The tilt of the Earth´s axis when it revolves around the Sun produces the four seasons. These depend on the angle of the Sun´s rays when they reach the Earth´s surface.

    1.In set one there are four pictures of animals. The bear, the tiger and the rhino are sleeping but the sea lion isn´t, so the sea lion is the odd one out.
    2. In set two there are four pictures of animals.
The zoo keepers are cleaning the elephant, the rhino and the hippo. But in picture four the zookeeper is feeding the bear, so picture four is the odd one out .
    3. In set three there are four pictures. The children are picking strawberries, apples and oranges but in picture three the girl is doing some crafts, so picture three is the odd one out.
    4. In set four there are four pictures. The children are playing with toy lizards but in picture two the girl is playing with a toy bat, so picture two is the odd one out.

Exploring space

The USA and the USSR compete to explore space, we know this as "Space Race".

- 1957: "Sputnik" 1.The USSR sends the first man-made satellite to orbit the Earth.

          "Sputnik 2".   The USSR sends the first animal to orbit the Earth ( a dog called Laika).

- 1958: "NASA" (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) is created by the USA.

- 1961: "Vostock 1" is sent by the USSR to orbit the Earth with a man on board (Yury Gagarin).

- 1963:  "Vostock 6" is sent by the USSR to orbit the Earth with a woman on board Valentina Tereshkova).

- 1969: "Apollo 11" is sent by the USA to explore the moon. Neil armstrong is the first person to walk on the moon.

- 1998: "The IST", International Space Station is launched to orbit the Earth. It´s a large laboratory in outer space where astronauts and scientist from different countries can operate in.

People who made a difference: Neil Armstrong.

When did he fly for the first time? He flew for the first time when he was six years old.

When he grew older he became a test pilot. 

He tested the "Apollo 11" and was the first astronaut to walk on the moon.

What did he do after being an astronaut? He became a professor of Aerospace Engineering.

    . Now, telescopes use mirrors, for example the famous Hubble .

- Robotic machines are sent to space to collect information:

    . Rovers are space vehicles with wheels that can lad and explore the surface of a moon or planet.

    . Probes orbit distant planets and moons.

 What shape is the Earth?

-In the past, people believed that the Earth was flat.

-Later, the Greeks understood that the Earth was sphere.

-Now, thanks to the images satellites send we are sure the Earth is round.
