 Simple Machines

Simple machines make work easier. It has few or no moving parts.

Machines which move objects need energy.

Load is the object you want to move.

Effort is the force you apply.

Simple machines normally only need energy from people to function.

There are six types of simple machines.

1) An inclined plane is used to move objects from one level to another.

2) A wedge is made up of two inclined planes put together, and it is used to split or cut objects, and to hold objects in place.

3) A pulley is made up of a rope and one or two wheels, and it is used to lift or lower an object more easily.

4) A screw is made up of an inclined plane around a cylinder, and it is used to tighten or join two objects together.

5) A wheel and axle makes it faster and easier to transport objects.

6) A lever is a bar which moves on a fulcrum, and it is used to push and move an object with less force.

There are three types of levers depending on where the fulcrum is.

An example of a class 1 lever is a seesaw.

An example of a class 2 lever is a wheelbarrow.

An example of a class 3 lever is a hockey stick.
